Anonymous: We’re Stealing Credit Cards, Funds From Banks for Christmas

 By: Fahmida Y. Rashid, eWeek

In an attempt to play Robin Hood, some Anonymous members say they are hacking into banks to buy items such as iPhones, iPads and iPods requested by random people. Hacktivist collective Anonymous has announced a new campaign for the holiday season: to steal from the rich. Dubbed “DestructiveSec,” the collective said it will steal virtual credit cards from banks and give “back to the people who had everything taken,” according to a statement posted on text-sharing site Pastebin on Dec. 12. The statement did not name any targets or provide any details.

Cloud Computing: Forecasting First Steps of Adoption

By: Howard M. Cohen, eWeek

Consumers who have been using online services for more than a decade may have become confused when popular software providers such as Microsoft started declaring “to the cloud” in reference to just about every imaginable online service. The typical consumer computer user didn’t realize they were using what is now called cloud services. An August report from The NPD Group found that while only 22 percent of U.S. consumers claimed familiarity with the term “cloud computing,” more than three-quarters were using services that could be characterized as cloud-computing services. Primary among these consumer cloud activities were email, tax preparation, online gaming and photo and video sharing.

Computer Scientists Create Algorithm That Measures Human Pecking Order

by KFC, Technology Review

Measuring power and influence on the web is a matter of huge interest. Indeed, algorithms that distill rankings from the pattern of links between webpages have made huge fortunes for companies such as Google. One the most famous of these is the Hyper Induced Topic Search or HITS algorithm which hypothesises that important pages fall into two categories–hubs and authorities–and are deemed important if they point to other important pages and if other important pages point to them. This kind of thinking led directly to Google’s search algorithm PageRank. The father of this idea is John Kleinberg, a computer scientist now at Cornell University in Ithaca, who has achieved a kind of cult status through this and other work. It’s fair to say that Kleinberg’s work has shaped the foundations of the online world. Today, Kleinberg and a few pals put forward an entirely different way of measuring power and influence; one that may one day have equally far-reaching consequences. These guys have worked out how to measure power differences between individuals using the patterns of words they speak or write.

Touchless smartphones and TVs could be on sale in 2012

By Katia Moskvitch, BBC

So you’ve lost your TV remote control. Again. Not to worry, says a tiny Israeli start-up company called XTR3D – soon you’ll be able to flick through channels and adjust the volume using only… your hand. You’ll just have to turn your palm towards the screen, and zap away without ever getting off the couch. And no need for under-the-skin electronics or fancy microchips. Instead, the TV – or rather gesture recognition software installed inside – will “read” your moves and execute appropriate commands, without any need for physically pressing any buttons. Based in Tel Aviv, XTR3D is one of the developers of such motion capture technology, and it has just received $8m (£5m) investment bound to give “touchless” tech another push – and according to the firm, bring the first motion control smartphone into the market as early as next year.

IBM Takes Analytics to School

By: Darryl K. Taft, eWeek

IBM announced a major strategy to deliver business analytics programs to universities around the world.IBM announced that it is working with universities around the world to bring advanced analytics training into the classroom. In a Dec. 21 announcement, IBM said it is expanding its academic initiatives for business analytics with new programs in China, India, Ireland and Scotland, helping students keep pace with the competitive job market by gaining skills in this fast-growing field of technology. IBM said each day, people create the equivalent of 2.5 quintillion bytes of data from sensors, mobile devices, online transactions and social networks—so much that 90 percent of the world’s data has been generated in the past two years. This amounts to more data than organizations can effectively use without applying analytics, IBM said. Thus, the new IBM programs are providing students and faculty members with access to the latest software capabilities and thinking on how advanced analytics can be applied to tackle complex business and societal challenges.

Windows 8 to feature image sign-on system

by the BBC

Using Windows 8 devices could involve signing on by tapping, circling or touching images. Microsoft has revealed details of a login system for the next version of Windows based around pictures a user stores on a touchscreen device. Only when parts of an image are tapped or touched in the right order will a user be able to access a device. Experts said it might stop people using weak passwords but could lead to other loopholes that are harder to solve.

How 3-D Photovoltaics Could Revolutionize Solar Power

by KFC, Technology Review

The Sun sends some 87 Petawatts of power our way and converting some small fraction of this into usable power is one of the key battlefronts in the fight to free the world from its addiction to oil. One way to capture that power is to turn light into electricity using flat photovoltaic panels. This form of power generation is rapidly expanding all over the world. Marco Bernardi and pals at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge say there is a simple fix that could dramatically increase the performance of photovoltaics. Instead of two dimensional flat panels, Bernadi and co suggest using three dimensional structures. They’ve simulated the performance of various shapes and tested several of these on the roof of a building at MIT. Their results indicate that 3D structures can increase the amount of energy that can be generated by a given footprint by as much as 20 times.

Kenya Has Mobile Health App Fever

by David Talbot, Technology Review

Mobile health platforms are fast emerging in Kenya, where one startup’s newly launched mobile health platform is attracting nearly 1,000 downloads daily, and the dominant telecom, Safaricom, has forged a partnership that will give its 18 million subscribers access to doctors. A World Bank official sees significant promise from such efforts, pointing to the fact that 50 percent of all Kenyan banking is already done on mobile phones—suggesting that the population is ready to go mobile with health care, too.

Best SWTOR Guide

When Star Wars The Old Republic was first announced, it was greeted with much enthusiasm, which grew exponentially as gameplay videos, stunning landscape images, and resources on SWTOR history and planet systems were released. The game takes place several millenia before Darth Vader's violent rise to power, at a time when tensions between the Empire and the Republic are at their highest. Years before, the peaceful Republic emerged as the victor when faced with a surprise attack by the Empire, but the following years brought war and several painful defeats to the Republic. After many setbacks, including treachery and failed negotiations, the Republic was forced to sign the Treaty of Coruscant, which ended the war but handed over several territories to the Empire.

It is in the midst of such a chaotic time that players enter the game, and are immediately faced with one of the many decisions that will affect their future gameplay - whether they should align themselves with the forces of the Empire or the Republic. Next, players must make the important decision of choosing a class within the side they choose to align with. The Republic offers the classes of Trooper, Smuggler, Jedi Knight, and Jedi Consular, while the Empire has a Bounty Hunter, Sith Warrior, Imperial Agent, and Sith Inquisitor. Each class can have different functions and benefits and should be further researched before a decision is made.

http://YOURCBNAME.swtorsav.hop.clickbank.net/
SWTOR features many never-before-seen implementations, including the much awaited space combat. Traveling in starships that may be unique for each class, players journey through space and face dangers specific to space travel, including enemy fighters and dangerous obstacle courses. Other plants also become accessible and open to exploration with the help of space travel. Additionally, there are numerous questlines to be tackled and companions that can acquired by completing them. Companions can be used as part of a crew that is at the player's command, which can be helpful if the player is occupied elsewhere and needs materials gathered or items crafted in their absence. SWTOR is also rife with PvP options, including several warzones where the Empire faces off against the Republic for various rewards. Team work is very important in PvP and the new flashpoints, which can be very difficult without proper communication and mutual understanding.

The introduction of so much new content can be frustrating for any player, and a guide is a must-have with a game that is as vast and rich in content as Star Wars The Old Republic. Guides can help those who are completely new to the game and those who are already familiar with it because they provide such a wealth of information. For beginners, there is information about how to get started, including class details and leveling tips. For players who have already started their journey or are getting ready for end-game content, SWTOR guides can help by providing guidance for flashpoints and raids. In the event that a player is considering a guide, the best SWTOR guide available is SWTOR Savior, which has all the information Star Wars The Old Republic players could possibly wish for.

New Camera Captures Light in Motion

by Tom Simonite, Technology Review
Hollywood has to resort to trickery to show moviegoers laser beams traveling through the air. That’s because the beams move too fast to be captured on film. Now a camera that records frames at a rate of 0.6 trillion every second can truly capture the bouncing path of a laser pulse. The system was developed by researchers led by Ramesh Raskar at MIT’s Media Lab. Currently limited to a tabletop inside the group’s lab, the camera can record what happens when very short pulses of laser light—lasting just 50 femtoseconds (50,000 trillionths of a second) long—hit objects in front of them. The camera captures the pulses bouncing between and reflecting off objects. Raskar says the new camera could be used for novel kinds of medical imaging, tracking light inside body tissue. It could also enable novel kinds of photographic manipulation. In experiments, the camera has captured frames roughly 500 by 600 pixels in size.

Educators Look for Resources, New Programs Amid STEM Push

By D.A. Barber, THE Journal

Educators are facing mounting pressure to improve the quality of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) instruction across the country. While numerous studies suggest that students need to learn science through hands-on inquiry, classroom teachers are often unable to generate effective lessons because of their own lack of background in science. Worse, teachers are increasingly lacking the time or tools to do the job as school districts face greater financing challenges and mandated initiatives. Recent developments, such as President Obama’s push to prepare 100,000 new STEM educators over the next 10 years, the effort by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) to have science standards included in the Common Core State Standards, and the adoption of STEM initiatives in nearly a dozen states, have added to the pressure. But with a little digging, educators can find resources to engage their students in STEM topics without breaking the budget.

Google begins to roll out Google+ features for Blogger

by Drew Olanoff, the Next Web

Back in October, Blogger started letting select users choose to display their Google+ profile with their blog, instead of the original boring Blogger profile. That feature has been made available to all Blogger users today, along with another handy new feature. If you’ve connected Google+ with your Blogger profile, you will now have the option to automatically share each published post to Google+. While it’s not the most exciting feature, it’s a step towards integrating Google’s social product into its most popular social product on the web before Google+, Blogger. The team promises more features in the coming months to join the two service experiences together.

OneNote for iPad may hint at future pricing of Office for the device

by Alex Wilhelm, the Next Web

Microsoft released OneNote for the iPad, and as ZDNet noted, its $14.99 price point does seem to line up with what the Daily had previously claimed as the straight dope from Redmond. Let’s assume that Microsoft is building the equivalent of Office Home and Student for the iPad. That edition contains Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. Now, we know that OneNote costs some $14.99, so let’s continue that price for each of the individual applications. Naturally, are assuming that Microsoft will release the applications discretely, as Apple has done, and as it has done in the past on the iPad. That means that Office will cost any user roughly $60 for the full set.

Santa shows off technology skills

School of Thought

by Dave Thier, Best of New Orleans

4.0 Schools has made a point not to look like it’s in the traditional education field. Located on the second floor of the IP building in the Warehouse District, the company shares its space with tech startups, design firms, freelance videographers and a conveniently located bar. The offices themselves are aiming for a look like a Silicon Valley startup from the height of the tech boom. One room has two drafting stools and a tall table in the center — that one is for working. There’s another one with beanbag chairs — that one is for thinking. In the back, there’s a windowless room they call the “wind tunnel” (narrowly beat out “the grinder”) — that one is for presentation. They’ve ordered a big propeller off eBay to put on the wall.

UK Rural broadband stalled, says Countryside Alliance

By Jane Wakefield, BBC

The Countryside Alliance says plans to bring fast broadband to rural areas have stalled. The government named four pilot areas last year, but local councils have admitted that they have not yet started work on their broadband projects. Freedom of information requests were sent to councils in each area. The responses revealed that none had received any money from the Treasury, chosen a company to build their networks, or started work on them. In October last year George Osborne named Cumbria, Herefordshire, North Yorkshire and the Highlands and Islands, as pilot areas for rural superfast broadband networks.

Google Attacking Amazon With Same-day Product Delivery

By: Clint Boulton, eWeek

No doubt many people have read about and have had time to parse the ramifications of Google allegedly building a rival to Amazon’s Prime two-day shipping service. Aside from denting Amazon’s e-commerce armor, Google could also gain some valuable customer data to target consumers with ads. The crux is that Google Product Search would offer users the option of paying to have goods they find through the comparison engine from retailers shipped to their homes that same day or the next. Participating retailers for this service could include Gap and Macy’s.

More Transparent Tracking—Why Is There No App for That?

By David Talbot, Technology Review

Amid widespread concern over an obscure piece of smart-phone diagnostic software that some experts say could be used to collect and transmit sensitive information, a leading academic has called on the industry to give users a one-click way to see what their gadgets are actually doing. “It would be good to have some form of auditing function built into our devices,” says Jonathan Zittrain, Harvard Law School professor and cofounder of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society. “The auditing function can be implemented by Apple and by handset makers through Android. Make it part of the ‘About’ tab. And it would show with whom the phone has been communicating and the sorts of things it has been sending.”

Know a Child Who Can Use a Tech Makeover?

By Mike Agerbo, Get Connected

Technology has changed many aspects of how we do business and live our lives, but it’s also radically changed education. Many schools are incorporating technology into learning, and those that don’t risk being left behind in this digital age. Canada ‘Recycle for Education’ contest for a chance to win one of 20 computer labs valued at $25,000 each! “This is our chance to recognize young students and schools doing their part to make their community a little greener,” said Steve Matyas, president of Staples Canada. Check out their video about the contest: Public school students are asked to write a 300-word essay describing the eco-responsible initiative(s) their school has adopted. Over 100 entries have been received so far, meaning there are still very good odds for schools that enter. If you know a school that can benefit from the latest in computer tech, enter the contest! It closes on December 16.

The Cyber Security Industrial Complex

By David Talbot, Technology Review

A claim by Wikileaks that documents it released last week provide evidence of a “secret new industry” of mass surveillance was as breathless as previous pronouncements from Julian Assange’s organization. But the material does provide a stark reminder that our online activities are easily snooped upon, and suggests that governments or police around the world can easily go shopping for tools to capture whatever information they want from us. The take-home for ordinary computer users is that the privacy and security safeguards they use—including passwords and even encryption tools—present only minor obstacles to what one researcher calls the “cyber security industrial complex.”

When Couples Find Gadgets Interfere With Harmony

The interloper is my husband’s iPad, a purchase I objected to strenuously. After a long day of squinting at my work desktop, my home desktop, my laptop and my cellphone, I am happy to unleash my eyeballs and retire to the quiet, still pages of an old-fashioned book. The iPad, with its cheerful icons and insistent gleam, invariably tugs my gaze away from my own reading material, an inescapable distraction. I can’t read next to it. My husband loves it.
Our tussle over e-reader versus “dead wood” (as technophiles would cruelly have it) isn’t the only device-based disagreement wedging itself between otherwise harmonious relationships. Recently, in an effort to troubleshoot a glitch on my iPhone, I asked a colleague for help. “I’ve thought about getting an iPhone,” she said wistfully. “But my husband is very anti-Apple. He doesn’t want any of their products in the house.”
Next to these kinds of disputes, political discord à la Mary Matalin-James Carville feels very 1994.
In one relationship, the man may insist on a Kindle while his wife may use a Nook. For other couples, it’s the persistent BlackBerry or iPhone divide or the old PC versus Mac debate. One partner uses a Zune rather than the near-ubiquitous iPod. Others argue the relative appeal of tablets over laptops.
Technology can draw couples closer. How adorable one pair might look marveling at items in the Apple store together! How lovely to trade books on the Kindle. Isn’t it darling the way they exchange videos of the children on their smartphones? So cute (or nauseating) when couples tweet back and forth or flirt on their partner’s Facebook wall.
But not all couples get along technologically. “My boyfriend, Bill, thinks my cellphone is ridiculous,” said Amy Robinson, 28, who still uses a 1990s-era Nokia. “He makes fun of me all the time: Why do you still have that phone? What’s wrong with you?” Bill Rice, 30, who works at a tech startup, was among the first people to get a Motorola Xoom. When the 4G Android was announced, he counted down the days to its release.
As compatible as a couple may be as friends, lovers and domestic partners, technological incompatibility can be infuriating. Because while couples love each other, they also adore their gadgets. Studies have demonstrated that people develop something akin to love for their cellphones, for example. One study found that young Australians believed “their cellphones were part of them.” In another study, only 1 percent of American college students said that were they to lose their cellphone they “would try to live without one.” The introduction of Siri will probably only exacerbate the already documented tendency to anthropomorphize our clever little electronic companions.
Melody Chalaban, 35, an iPhone user and public relations manager at a software company, and Michael Swain, 35, Android owner and architect, illustrated the Save the Date for their October wedding with the image of an Android robot tossing an Apple logo high into the air. (Which person, if either, emerged the winner is open to interpretation.)
Even those who cannot tell a Birkin from a Bottega Veneta can become fervent about their chosen brand of contraption and fierce when challenged on its merits. For many, their personal chunk of Corning Gorilla Glass and polycarbonate becomes symbolic, a kind of character flag that identifies the owner as iconoclast, Luddite, techie or mechanically indifferent aesthete.
And a couple’s electronic identities don’t always match. “I hate both her iPads and her Kindle Fire,” Charles Ardai, 42, a managing director at D. E. Shaw Group and publisher of Hard Case Crime books, said of the tablet collection his wife, Naomi Novik, 38, owns. “I have an atavistic loathing of books that are not paper and ink.”
These differences, Mr. Ardai said, go deeper than a surface I-like-this-gizmo-better-than-that-one. “Naomi is the ultimate early adopter because she’s fundamentally an optimist,” he said. “And I’m fundamentally a pessimist, which is why I write dark, brooding fiction and have quaint technological notions.” (Ms. Novik, for her part, specializes in science fiction and fantasy.)
It is interesting to note that gender disparities in gadget choices are not significant. A number of studies through the mid-2000s found that women are more attached to their cellphones than men are, though that tendency could change now that smartphones (with their capacity for gaming, stock price tracking and Internet dawdling) are taking over.

Bits Blog: E-Commerce Sites Cater to Procrastinators by Extending Free Shipping

A FedEx plane is unloaded in Los Angeles.Jae C. Hong/Associated PressA FedEx plane is unloaded in Los Angeles.
Free shipping has become a necessary evil for online retailers, and this year many are extending their free shipping cut-off dates for Christmas gifts.
Nine out of 10 online retailers will offer free shipping at some point this holiday season, and many retailers will extend the offer through Dec. 20, according to Shop.org, part of the National Retail Federation. Eighty-six percent of those offering free overnight or two-day shipping have extended those offers to Dec. 22.
For many retailers, the last day for free shipping by Christmas Eve — called Free Shipping Day — had been Friday, Dec. 16. For others, it was Monday, Dec. 12, called Green Monday. Free Shipping Day used to be the biggest online shopping day of the year until Cyber Monday outdid it.
But a third of online holiday shoppers say they will spend more if shipping is free, according to Shop.org, and retailers are paying attention. Fifty-six percent of e-commerce companies said their budget for free shipping promotions was significantly higher than it was last year.
“As consumers shop around for the perfect gifts, express and standard free shipping offers could be the deciding factor for many procrastinators this holiday season,” Vicki Cantrell, executive director of Shop.org, said in a statement.
On Tuesday, Amazon.com announced that it extended its deadline for free shipping in time for Christmas on orders $25 and higher to Dec. 19. Amazon Prime members, who pay an annual fee of $79, get free Christmas shipping through Dec. 21. And for the true procrastinators, items ordered on Dec. 24 will be delivered the same day for $3.99 for Prime members in certain cities, including Boston, Chicago, New York, Seattle and Washington.
At Zappos.com this season, gift buyers who order on Dec. 22 will receive free overnight delivery on Dec. 23. Zappos is promoting its offer on Twitter with a campaign called 12 Days of Zappos. Each day through Dec. 23, it will give a free gift to someone who writes a Twitter post about it.
“Zappos considers itself anti-Green Monday because free shipping both ways, 365 days a year is the norm — even during the busiest shopping season,” the company said in a statement.
Blue Nile, the online jeweler, is offer free FedEx shipping in time for Christmas on most jewelry through Dec. 23, though the company originally thought that day would be Dec. 19.
“Your biggest day is going to be the last day you can ship and have it arrive in time for the holidays,” said Mark Vadon, chairman of Blue Nile.

Slipstream: Bill Would Let Video Consumers Disclose All Their Choices

Netflix is backing a bill in Congress that would amend the Video Privacy Protection Act, a 1988 law that requires a video services company to get a customer’s written consent when it seeks to disclose that client’s personal information, such as rental history. The new bill, passed by the House last Tuesday, would allow consumers to give one-time blanket consent online for a company to share their viewing habits continuously.

In a social networking ecosystem where sharing information about personal activities is already ubiquitous, the bill may seem to be a no-brainer. After all, Foursquare already shares its members’ locations. Spotify already shares the titles of songs its members are playing with their Facebook cohorts. And Facebook publishes links to articles that its members’ friends have read. So, Netflix executives argue, it’s high time for a bill that would give members of video services the same option to divulge their personal details.
“It really is meant to empower the consumer to be able to share with their friends,” says David Hyman, the general counsel of Netflix. He says the bill simply updates an outmoded law so that it matches the way we live now. “It really kind of levels the playing field in social media.”
But some privacy scholars and advocates are warning that the bill actually diminishes a person’s ability to select what to share — and with whom — on a case-by-case basis. If the Senate passes the bill as currently written, they say, the revised law would undermine consumers’ control over information collected about them even as it empowers companies to create and share more detailed customer profiles. Netflix isn’t lobbying for a mere amendment, they argue; it wants Congress to dismantle a gold standard among privacy statutes.
“They are not trying to modernize the law,” says Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, a public interest research group in Washington. “They are trying to gut the law.” At stake, he argues, is not the ostensible sharing of a person’s video viewing history, but rather the larger issue of meaningful consent.
The Video Privacy Protection Act came about under unusual circumstances.
In 1987, the Washington City Paper, a weekly newspaper, published the video rental records of Judge Robert H. Bork, who at the time was a nominee to the Supreme Court. One of the paper’s reporters had obtained the records from Potomac Video, a local rental store. Judge Bork’s choice of movies — he rented a number of classic feature films starring Cary Grant — may have seemed innocuous.
But the disclosure of Judge Bork’s cultural consumption so alarmed Congress that it quickly passed a law giving individuals the power to consent to have their records shared. The statute, nicknamed the “Bork law,” also made video services companies liable for damages if they divulged consumers’ records outside the course of ordinary business.
To proponents of the new amendment, the law looks like a relic. Members of social networks today, they say, don’t want to be asked, each time they’ve watched another installment of “The Office,” whether that information can be shared with their friends.
People prefer frictionless sharing, a convenience hindered by the current law, says Christopher Wolf, a lawyer who is co-chairman of the Future of Privacy Forum, a Washington research group that receives financing from Google, Facebook and other digital media companies.
Moreover, Mr. Wolf says, the law restricts video services that seek to integrate with social networks like Facebook even as some music sites have already introduced sharing.
“Companies should not be exposed to hundreds of millions in damages just because particular hoops weren’t jumped through,” he says. “If people can share what they are listening to on Spotify, why shouldn’t they be able to share what videos they are watching?”
Still, video viewing remains a delicate area for many people because movie choices may open a window to a person’s religious or sexual preferences.
“Do you want your conservative friends to know that you watched a hyperviolent “Saw” movie or movies about the gay experience like ‘Brokeback Mountain’?” says Kevin Bankston, a senior staff lawyer at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital civil rights group in San Francisco. “Do you want your liberal friends to know you watch an enormous amount of religious movies?”
Any amendment, he argues, should preserve a person’s ability to choose what to share, case by case, rather than ceding control by giving a general waiver to a company.
“You should have the option to decide what goes on your wall,” he says.
But Netflix argues that the marketplace should dictate consumers’ level of control. Mr. Hyman, Netflix’s general counsel, says the bill lets people opt in to continual sharing by giving their affirmative consent — or to choose not to share at all.
Netflix, he adds, has already introduced a feature for its subscribers in Canada and Latin America who want to share the movies and TV shows they watch with their friends on the video site and on Facebook. Netflix gives these subscribers a choice of opting out of sharing an individual film or show.
“If it is determined that consumers want more control over what they share on a granular basis,” Mr. Hyman says, “you will see that being offered as opposed to it being legislated.”
To advance its agenda, Netflix has increased its presence in Washington. It spent $325,000 on lobbying in the first three quarters of this year, versus $30,000 in the same period in 2009, according to a report from the Center for Responsive Politics, a research group that tracks political spending.

Last week, some legislators complained that proponents of the bill rushed it through the House without a hearing or a full-scale debate. The bill is likely to face tougher scrutiny in the Senate.
Privacy advocates say they expect Senator Al Franken, the Minnesota Democrat who is chairman of the privacy, technology and law subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary Committee, to hold a hearing on the amendment early next year. And the Judiciary Committee, which has often opposed amending laws for the primary benefit of one company, may decide to strengthen the Bork law — by clarifying that it covers online video streaming, not just the old-fashioned rental of physical videos. (Hulu, a streaming video service, has already introduced a sharing option on Facebook.)
In an interview last week, Judge Bork, a distinguished fellow at the Hudson Institute, said he was glad Congress had remedied the unauthorized disclosure of video rental records with a law. But, he added, the amendment seemed to call for further public discussion.
“If you are going to enact change to a statute,” Judge Bork said, “you have to debate the question of whether the costs outweigh the benefits.”

Amazon to address Kindle Fire complaints

The Amazon Kindle Fire tablet is the top-selling device in the Kindle lineup. The Amazon Kindle Fire tablet is the top-selling device in the Kindle lineup.Update coming within two weeks, Amazon saysUpdate will address tablet's speed, touchscreen, says a spokesman$199 device has become a strong iPad competitor, although it's less powerfulSome critics have panned the device; others see a tablet for new buyers
(CNN) -- Kindle Fire, the stripped-down tablet computer that is emerging as perhaps the most popular rival to Apple's iPad, will be getting an update soon to address some early user complaints, Amazon said.
Amazon spokesman Drew Herdener said an operating-system update will improve speed and touchscreen controls and will give users controls over displaying recent browsing activity. Presumably, those controls would allow Kindle Fire owners to keep that activity private from other users.
"In less than two weeks, we're rolling out an over-the-air update to Kindle Fire," Herdener told the New York Times.
Messages to Amazon representatives were not immediately returned Monday morning.
In the nearly two years since the iPad was introduced, competitors have struggled to gain any traction in the tablet market with devices that attempt to rival the Apple device in features and price.
But Amazon's Kindle Fire is a smaller, simpler device that, at $199, is a full $300 cheaper than the least-expensive iPad 2.
Amazon has not given comprehensive sales figures for the Fire since it was released November 15. But the company has reported that it's the top-selling device in its Kindle lineup. Black Friday was the biggest sales day ever for the Kindle line of e-readers and tablets, said the online retailer, which sold four times as many of the devices as last year.
Kindle Fire vs. iPad 2: Which one is right for you?
But some users have been disappointed with the Fire's features.
Complaints, on Amazon's Fire user forums and elsewhere online, have centered on issues like the power button being too easy to hit accidentally, the lack of physical volume-control buttons and a touchscreen that isn't sensitive enough, making it sometimes hard to register touch controls.
Users have also grumbled that the device's Web browser, Silk, sometimes loads pages slowly.
"Is anyone else finding that it takes several tries to get the device to actually go to what you are pressing on the screen?" one user wrote on Amazon's official Kindle forums. "I am finding this TOTALLY FRUSTRATING! It is taking me several hits many times to get a reaction out of it. What is up with that?"
Jakob Nielsen, a Web usability expert and consultant, panned the Fire in a post on his site last week, calling its browser "clunky and error-prone" and saying its magazine-reading experience is "miserable."
But others remain sold on the device's appeal and potential.
"Initial market response strongly suggests that Amazon, with the Kindle Fire, has found the right combination of savvy pricing, astute marketing, accessible content and an appropriate business model, positioning the Kindle Fire to appeal to a brand-new set of media tablet buyers," wrote Rhoda Alexander, researcher for analyst firm IHS, this month.

Orange is One of The Service Providers in The UK

Cell phones are considered as the most important technology these days, as the usage of the cell phones has the life easy for many individuals. Nowadays the cell phones that are created are much more than basic handsets that were introduced years back. The cell phones that are developed these days have many more attractive features that excite the user to buy them at the very look at it. There are hundreds of cell phones that are developed by the cell phone making companies, but very few get the popularity that it deserves. Well, the popularity grows only if the mass enjoys and is benefitted with the features of the cell phone. The disadvantage of the cell phones that are created nowadays is that they come locked to one particular service provider only, which proves disadvantageous to them in many ways. The user have to use their cell phone under one service provider itself i.e. all the restricted services provided by the service provider only the user has to relish and has no other choice. He cannot even opt for another service provider as the cell would be locked to the particular service of a service provider only. There is many such service providers that the company would opt to attach their cell phone to while selling it. One of the opted service providers in UK is orange.

The cell phone making companies lock their cell phones with orange network while selling it to their consumers, which cannot be detached from for the next few months and if one does want to detach from it he/she needs to unlock their cell phone, which again is a task. Individuals buy them along with it and later opt to unlock it so as to make the optimum use of the cell phone i.e. use the features available in the cell phone, allow anyone else to use their cell phone or use someone else?s battery incase their battery has no charge in it. The user cannot insert another SIM card and enjoy the facilities offered by that service provider, since he?s tied down with the network service of the orange; therefore he needs to unlock the cell phone from the services offered by the orange service provider to enjoy the services of other service providers. For one to unlock it he/ she can approach the technician related to unlocking of cell phones or follow the steps provided online to complete the task or else one can easily accomplish the task by following the tutorials available online or ask the company officials to do the task.

Once a handset has been unlocked it can be used with an Orange SIM and/or any other compatible network SIM, allowing the consumer to enjoy the facilities that the other service provider offers which could not happen while being locked, so unlocking becomes a necessity so as to enjoy the facilities of the unlocked cell phone.

App Smart: Searching for Apps Is Finally Getting Easier

Luckily, that didn’t happen.
As consumers increasingly migrate to mobile apps and developers fight to have their apps discovered in the chaos of the marketplace, app-related search engines and stores have vastly improved their support for both constituencies.
Apple users have seen some improvement, but Android is the much bigger story of the year because of upgrades to the Android Market, the emergence of the Amazon Appstore for Android (which sells only Android apps) and upgrades to existing services like Appolicious and Appbrain.com.
Of these developments, the polishing of the Android Market Web site is the most meaningful. The version of the Android Market offered on mobile devices was fairly good, but the Web version was a shallow, amateurish sampler that inexplicably offered users no way to search for apps.
Considering the fact that Android is owned by Google, it was a shockingly poor performance.
Google started fixing that problem in February by introducing search on the Market Web site and populating the Market with a big assortment of categories for browsing.
As the year progressed, the Market added editors’ picks, trending apps and spruced up the graphics, to the point where the service bears a passing resemblance to the iTunes App Store.
More recently, Google took a page from Amazon’s playbook by virtually giving away apps that, in some cases, were among the more popular and expensive in the Market. But instead of making this a pure giveaway, the Market is selling 10 apps daily for 10 cents apiece, thereby requiring customers to enter their credit card information.
That’s a line many prospective app buyers refuse to cross, either because of the inconvenience or because of fear that their financial information may somehow be compromised. But for apps like SoundHound Infinity and Minecraft — Pocket Edition (both regularly $7) and SwiftKey X Keyboard (regularly $4), the sale price is quite an enticement.
Unfortunately, Google last week still showed signs that it was not ready to rival Apple or Amazon

Mobile enabled corporate intranet solution for secured information sharing and knowledge management

Corporate intranets are an indigenous system that supports the organization as a channel of communication with its employees. This system is effective and quick as the distribution or information exchange process is done with no traditional hazards like employees meeting in person or work together on a single project within closed walls. The organization database and other relevant information is streamlined with the incorporation with intranet facilities. Adding on to all the positive traits of intranet provision, the disadvantage is that this access point can be tapped by unauthorized miscreants and the private information can be leaked to the public or manipulated. With the solution developed to access the intranet web content via mobile phone, it is not only easy to access the desired information but more secured too. The solution involved development of a middleware through which critical information from the Intranet can be mobile enabled so that it can be accessed even when the employees are on field and away from the office on their mobile devices.

In the process of development of the malware, the most critical challenge was to be careful that there is no compromise of the data available on the intranet. The option available was to create native application residing on the mobile devices which could connect to the Enterprise environment and fetch the data using secure protocols.

The solution is so crafted that the functionality is perfected in depth to suit all the types of the devices used by the employees across the globe. In true sense, the work environment is made available even on the move to the workforce that is a part of an organization that has successfully leveraged mobility into their enterprise.

The share point environment is accessed effectively with an accurate design and development of the middleware for interaction purposes. The XML based markup language, the Collaborative Application Markup Language (better known as CAML) is being used in building and customizing web-sites based on Windows SharePoint Services.

Retrieving List Items with CAML using the SharePoint Object Model is not being used in this implementation to do away with the limitation of the middleware deployment, which otherwise has to be deployed within the SharePoint environment. This enables the middleware to be deployed anywhere outside the SharePoint server. The middleware deciphers the request coming from the device and presents the mobile webpage for the particular device.

Mobility is the most required technology in all verticals. Employees are no more within indoors working for the organization. With a strategic consulting with mobility companies, the management and the workforce of an enterprise irrespective of business vertical can undoubtedly expect a better productivity from the workforce and an impressive ROI.

The solutions developed for the corporate intranet will not only ensure a secured path for sharing private information but also makes sure that the data is not exposed to public nor can be manipulated by the hackers for personal or corporate destruction. The people associated with the company looking at mobile work environment will definitely appreciate the functioning of the solution. The very intention of this solution is to safeguard the corporate intranet and to offer information to the intended users from any point. iPhone Application Development and iPhone Game Development The Thundering Field

iPhone Application Development and iPhone Game Development is so far the most interesting development in the mobile application development field and has changed the way we have looked and worked with app development and designing. With good user interface and coding prefixes we are at the stage of the beginning of totally new era of programming and designing Apps and Games. If you look at the basic SDK which was release in 2008 and the SDK which we use right now (4.3), it has been dramatically improved. iPhone Application Development and iPhone Game Development has not as same as what we used to deal with last year.

There has been lot of change on the technical point of view for the developers, in iPhone Application Development. One of the major differences now we can see is the speed of the user interface and more systematic approach to the file management and coding methodology. There are many other improvements which apple has done and also not to forget making multitasking available for apps has really given wings to iPhone Application Development. Development of business apps, apps for children, utility apps etc. can be widely covered by the base SDK itself and most of the time there is no need for using any external APIs.

iPhone Game Development on the other hand has also got some new things to play with. As we know iPhone Game Development can not only be done using base SDK, especially for complex game and graphics. We need engines like Coco2D and Unity for better lookout and smooth play. The Good news for all the game development community is Cocos3D has been launched and is getting updated while I am writing this article, it might be in initial stages but we believe it will make much difference compare to developing games in Unity 3D which on the other has is bit costly considering the game development requirements.

As we are near the launch of iOS 5 which is in its 5th beta release, we expect there will be many more things on the platter then what we see right now on Apple?s website. iPhone Application Development and iPhone Game Development has changed the way we have programmed, designed and scaled our level of mobile app development and estimated mobile computing future. With iPhone 5 look and feel rumors in air, one can smell the thunder coming right to us, like Apple throwing updates to developers and saying ? ?Let?s see what you can do with that ....?

Structural Integrity at a Glance

Who looks for structural integrity of the ground?

Geotechnical engineers, which are a branch of civil engineers, are responsible for understanding the engineering behavior of the earth. This may include soil, rocks, or any other natural items found on the ground. Geotechnical analysis is used in civil planning of cities and communities as well as by the military and corporations involved in mining or petroleum excuvation. A key component of geotechnical analysis is to evaluate the stability of the earth materials and to assess if there are any risks in building at that location. Without this analysis, serious damage could happen during the construction of a project, or after it is complete, potentially putting people at risk. The use of geotechnical monitoring instruments enable these engineers to accurately understand what condition the ground is in and determine an appropriate course of action. In some cases this is building up the ground, in others it is determining how to make a building stable in the event of an earthquake at that location.

What properties of the Earth can affect structural integrity?

Geotechnical monitoring instruments are looking for the properties of soil. These properties are sometimes referred to as soil mechanics. In general, soil is made up of three phases, the particles we associate with being soil and spaces in between the soil which are filled with air or water. Geotechnical analysis of a sample will take into consideration properties like the unit weight of the sample, which is just the weight of a whole sample. Porosity, which is the ratio of space in a sample to the whole sample, and compressibility which measures the volume change of a sample with added stress.

Each of these properties can have an enormous impact on the structural integrity of a building, rig or mine. If soil is incredibly porous, issues may arise with runoff in heavy rains, a soil that compresses easily may lead to sink holes under foundations. A thorough plan with a geotechnical engineer will not include knowing issues in the ground but also design the proper foundation for the area. Getting the proper foundation is critical since it will be transferring weight from the building onto the ground. If changes in the earth impact this capacity the whole building is at risk.

A brief guide to the history of cable TV

Cable TV is very important to a large number of households nowadays and it offers a variety of ways to entertain the whole family as well as to learn something and to inform ourselves about what is happening in our country or around the world. Nowadays, about 60% of the people in most countries have access to cable TV and the middle-class households are the ones that account for most of the subscriptions. Cable TV was not nearly as popular the first time it came to life and there were a lot of obstacles to be tackled in order for it to gain popularity and become so convenient as it is nowadays.
The 1940s
Cable TV first came to life in 1948 and its first name was Community Antenna TV also known as CATV. At the time, the purpose of it was to make better the reception of any TV signals that reached mountainous areas. John Walson who owned an appliance store in Pennsylvania was the first one to put an antenna right on the top of a hill and this way make it possible for the residents of the city to watch TV with higher quality of the picture. He used coaxial cables in order to bring the picture to the homes of the people using CATV and then created some of the first amplifiers which were used.
1950s
By the year 1952 about 70 CATV systems had been placed all over the world and they were used in order to serve around 14 000 people that had subscribed to the service. Later on it was Walson who again started doing experiments with microwaves and they were used in order to pick up signals that came from some distant locations. CATV was brought to the homes of many subscribers now and it offered a large number of channels that could be picked up because of the increased range of the reception. This is what made CATV really attractive to a large number of people in America mostly.
1960s
By 1862 there were about 600 cable TV stations all around America and they functioned in order to satisfy the needs of the subscribers that were more than 800 000. The industry gathered some big investors and this meant that cable TV was going to grow in popularity even further. Local TV stations saw competition in cable TV providers and they made the progress of cable TV slower since they did not want to lose their whole profits.
In 1972 for the first time in the US there was a cable company which offered some paid cable TV services of higher quality that were worth paying for. This became really popular very soon and many people subscribed for it in the coming years. The development of cable TV continued rapidly and nowadays it is a big part of the home of almost every person all over the world. There is not a single person who has not heard of cable TV.
